As we traversed the oft’ dusty roads on the African continent, we encountered common reminders of camaraderie: dogs, stars and rum. Each camp site, every homestead and every farmer had a dog and all their tails were wagging. Affectionate dogs made me think of home.
Every night we spent sleeping under the kikoi of the stars and the naked stems of baobab and marula trees, we found ourselves in the unwavering company of the Milky way. Canis Major was there, standing on its hind legs chasing the hare, and inside it was Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky.
As we stared up at the magnificent display we found a new sense of togetherness as we shared of a glass of rum…a wonderful foregrounding of what was to come.
